Dog in WaterThe dog days of summer can be brutal in Dallas. That is why it's so important to take the following steps to protect your pup from heat-related illnesses and even death.

Never Leave Your Dog in the Car

While you may be tempted to leave your dog in your car while you run into a store for a quick errand, don't ever do it. According to the American Kennel Club, it only takes 20 minutes for the temperature inside of a car to reach 100 degrees on a 70-degree day. Dogs are especially susceptible to heat stroke because they can only cool down by panting, which is not as effective as sweating for lowering their body temperature.

Limit Walks on Hot Surfaces

On hot days, keep your pet off asphalt, sand, or pavement whenever possible. Your pup's little paws can burn easily, especially since asphalt can be between 40 and 60 degrees hotter than the air temperature in certain circumstances. So, try to make your pup walk on grass or dirt whenever possible.

Bring Water and a Portable Bowl

If you'll be hiking or engaging in any other outdoor activity during the summer, make sure to bring a portable water bowl and water with you. You should also keep a portable water bowl in your car for road trips.

Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion

During the summer, it's especially important to watch for signs of heat exhaustion and stroke in dogs, including the following symptoms:

  • Excessive panting
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Excessive drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Uncoordinated movement

If you believe that your dog is displaying symptoms of heat stroke or exhaustion, your first course of action is to cool your pup down. If possible, place your dog in a bathtub or use a hose to cool it down with water. Then, take your dog to your vet as quickly as possible to get it checked out.

Potpourri
Many appreciate the aroma of potpourri in their Dallas apartments and homes. A well-crafted potpourri can add freshness and a warm atmosphere to an indoor space. Most people, however, associate potpourri with the cooler weather of the fall and winter. But did you know that you can make homemade potpourri for any season, including the spring?

Better yet, when you make your own stovetop potpourri, you can customize the blend of ingredients to best suit your sense of smell. Getting started is simple. Here are two homemade stovetop potpourri recipes to bring a springtime freshness to your space.

Lemon, Mint, and Thyme

Fresh citrus is the perfect choice for fragrant spring potpourri. This simple recipe calls for three slices of lemon, a handful of mint and some thyme. Place the mixture in two cups of water on the stove and heat to bring out the aroma. You can modify this recipe by swapping lime for lemon and by adding some fresh ginger. Add water as needed.

Lime, Mint, and Rosemary

Add three or four slices of lime in a pot with two cups of water and some mint and rosemary and heat to a slow simmer. Soon these fresh aromas will fill your home or apartment. Add water as needed. Add a stick of cinnamon if you wish to add another layer.

Additional Hints

It can be easy to forget you have a hot pot on the stove, so do not leave your home or retire for the evening without turning off your potpourri. Always make sure there is sufficient water in the pan. If you want to make fresh potpourri in advance, you can mix ingredients in a Mason-style jar for convenient storage in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them.

Making your own springtime stovetop potpourri is fun and rewarding. Enjoy how it adds a more comfortable feel to your Dallas apartment and living space.
