Dallas has it a little warmer than most of the country come autumn, but we do get our chilly days here and there throughout November. They're usually a welcome respite from the Texas heat, but a cold, rainy fall day can really throw your workout routine off when you were hoping for a morning jog. Here are some ideas to maintain your fitness no matter the weather:

Indoor Exercise

One of the easiest ways to give your muscles a gym-quality workout at home is self-resistance. This is a simple matter of working out by exercising against your own strength.

For instance:

  • Sit in your chair with hands on either side of your knees. Press your knees together with your hands while giving resistance with your thighs. This works a bit like a fly press.
  • Press your palms together, fingers pointing up, thumb at your chest. Press hands together and slowly extend them forward, turning fingers outwards as you go, then back in. This works the same muscle group as a push-up.
  • Put your hands on your knees while seated, palms down. Attempt to lift your knees while pressing them back down with your hands. This simulates crunches.

You never know what you're going to get with Texas weather come November, but whether it's too hot out for a run or too cold, there are some simple indoor aerobic exercises you can use to get your heart rate up.

  • Stationary sprinting. You already know how to run in place. With stationary sprinting the idea is to lift your knees high and go as fast as you comfortably can.
  • Squat thrust. Stand up straight, feet at shoulder width. Squat with your knees, hands on the floor and feet kicked back straight behind you into a push-up position. Then back up and back down for thirty seconds at a time.

With summer just around the corner, now is the time to get your body in shape and ready for swimsuit season. Want to get the abs you have always dreamed of right in the comfort of your Dallas apartment? Check out the ab exercises below to flatten your stomach in no time.

Plank With Leg Raise

You can use this exercise to strengthen both your ab muscles and your glutes. Assume the planking position with your forearms resting on the floor, and your hands clasped directly below your head. Make sure your back is straight, and your abs are tightened. Tighten your glute and pull your leg up so that your foot is several inches off the floor. Keep your foot flexed and perform ten reps on each side. 

Half-Seated Hip Circle

This exercise is great for engaging your obliques as well as the rest of your abdominal muscles. From a seated position, recline and lean back on your elbows. Keep your abs tight and cup your hips with your hands. Try to keep your pelvis as still as possible. Next, keep your back pressed down while you extend your legs to a 60-degree angle. With your toes pointed and your inner thighs tightly together, move both feet in large clockwise circles. Repeat ten times clockwise then another ten times counterclockwise. 

Toe Taps

Toe Taps is a great ab workout for beginners, and it can be modified into a more difficult workout for those who are advanced. Start by lying on the ground with your arms resting at your sides. Pull your knees up to a 90-degree angle so that they are positioned over your abs. Take turns slowly lowering one leg at a time and then return it to the starting position. Continue to alternate with each leg; moving the leg in slow motion so that each rep takes about a minute. Start with 15 reps on each leg.

Swimming is one of the best exercises. It provides a great cardio workout and tones your entire body. Swimming is also a refreshing way to beat the Dallas, Texas, heat. If you never learned to swim when you were a kid, you don't have to let that stop you. Here are some tips for learning how to swim as an adult:

Get Comfortable With the Water

Before you start learning swim strokes, give yourself time to get used to being in the water. Practice standing in shallow water. Inhale through your mouth, then place your face in the water and exhale underwater out of your mouth and nose. Lift your head out of the water to inhale, and repeat. Practice as long as you need to until you feel comfortable.

Pretend You Are a Fish

When you start practicing strokes, cultivate a mindset in which you are relaxed in the water. Don't fight against the water. Instead, glide through it as if you were a fish.  

Try Wearing Goggles

Goggles make it possible to keep your eyes open in the water without any stinging. If you need vision correction, you can buy prescription goggles. Custom goggles that fit your exact prescription may be expensive, but you can find goggles online that have standard correction strengths that are relatively inexpensive and very helpful.

Practice Often

When learning to swim as an adult, you need to master many new complex skills. The more you can practice, the better. If you have access to a pool where you live, that would be ideal.

Have Fun

Learning to swim as an adult can be challenging, but it's also a blast. Moving through the water will feel different than anything you have ever done on land.
