As a pet-friendly apartment community in Dallas, Texas, we see lots of four-legged friends enter our doors every day. Some of our furry residents moved here with their owners, while others were adopted after their people already lived here. If you're getting ready to adopt a dog, here are some things you should consider:

Make Sure You Have Money for Unexpected Medical Expenses

A lot of people don't realize how expensive veterinary care can be until they're faced with a huge bill. Before you adopt a furry pet, be sure you have enough cash to handle medical expenses for unexpected incidents. These can range from bites from other dogs to accidental trips-and-falls that result in damaged tootsies. Of course, you'll want to be sure you're able to accommodate regular visits to the vet for checkups, shots, and teeth cleanings, too.

Work Out a Schedule

If you'll be away at the office for most of the day, who will watch your pooch? Be sure to screen and approve any dog walkers or sitters who might offer to watch your dog. Ask neighbors for recommendations, look for reviews on Yelp or check on Nextdoor for companies your neighbors give kudos to. Be sure to walk your pooch every morning before you leave for work, immediately after you get home and just before you all lay down to go to bed, to establish a solid routine.

Establish House Rules

Will your dog be allowed on the couch, or should he stay on the floor? Will you crate your pooch or trust him to run free while you're away? Make sure you've established ground rules before your pup comes into your home so you can enforce them consistently.

Be Patient

Sometimes, dogs have accidents or get sick. They're usually not doing this on purpose. Read up on your dog's breed so you can learn the triggers that might make him more sensitive to certain stimuli, and talk to your vet if you think the food you're feeding him isn't going over well. He might have food allergies or other problems that need to be recognized in order to ensure he's as healthy and happy as possible.

As a pet-friendly Dallas apartment community, South Side Flats is happy to welcome residents of all sorts. If you're looking for a place you and Fido can call home, we invite you to schedule a tour of our community today!

At South Side Flats, our pet-friendly apartments in Dallas, we're looking forward to cooler weather and maybe a bit of baking. And who better to share with than a treat-loving dog?

Here is a fun and fast recipe for PB&P (peanut butter and pumpkin) dog treats. You probably have the ingredients in your cupboard, and it will take only a few minutes to mix them.

Then, just pop these treats into the oven for 25 to 30 minutes.

PB&P (Peanut Butter and Pumpkin) Dog Treats

This is a fun recipe to make with the kids, for sharing, or even as a treat to take to the local shelter. Dogs love pumpkin and peanut butter, and these little biscuits are sure to impress. The hardest part is waiting for them to cool so you can let the pup dig in!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup instant or one-minute oats
  • Half can of pumpkin puree (unspiced)
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (natural, no added salt, no xylitol)

Making the Dough

  • Preheat your oven to 325 F.
  • Pulverize the oats in a blender or food processor, and add the peanut butter and pumpkin puree. Blend into the consistency of cookie dough.
  • Place your dough in a mixing bowl, and add more oats if needed for thickness.
  • Roll your dough out onto a floured cutting board. Cut into cookies or squares.

Baking the Biscuits

  • Place the dough pieces on a baking sheet. Be sure the baking sheet is greased — or, preferably, covered with baking parchment paper.
  • Bake the biscuits for 25 minutes. Remove them from the oven if they've become slightly browned and firm. If not, bake them another five minutes, until the treats are dry and hard.
  • Allow plenty of time for the biscuits to cool before giving them to your pup.
  • Store extra treats in a cookie tin. Or start sharing these around immediately!

In case you're wondering about the "no xylitol" rule — the vets tell us to avoid xylitol in peanut butter if we plan to share it with our dogs.

Dog in WaterThe dog days of summer can be brutal in Dallas. That is why it's so important to take the following steps to protect your pup from heat-related illnesses and even death.

Never Leave Your Dog in the Car

While you may be tempted to leave your dog in your car while you run into a store for a quick errand, don't ever do it. According to the American Kennel Club, it only takes 20 minutes for the temperature inside of a car to reach 100 degrees on a 70-degree day. Dogs are especially susceptible to heat stroke because they can only cool down by panting, which is not as effective as sweating for lowering their body temperature.

Limit Walks on Hot Surfaces

On hot days, keep your pet off asphalt, sand, or pavement whenever possible. Your pup's little paws can burn easily, especially since asphalt can be between 40 and 60 degrees hotter than the air temperature in certain circumstances. So, try to make your pup walk on grass or dirt whenever possible.

Bring Water and a Portable Bowl

If you'll be hiking or engaging in any other outdoor activity during the summer, make sure to bring a portable water bowl and water with you. You should also keep a portable water bowl in your car for road trips.

Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion

During the summer, it's especially important to watch for signs of heat exhaustion and stroke in dogs, including the following symptoms:

  • Excessive panting
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Excessive drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Uncoordinated movement

If you believe that your dog is displaying symptoms of heat stroke or exhaustion, your first course of action is to cool your pup down. If possible, place your dog in a bathtub or use a hose to cool it down with water. Then, take your dog to your vet as quickly as possible to get it checked out.

Welcoming a pet into your apartment is a fun and exciting time. However, some pets are more suited for apartment living than others. If you are trying to decide on a wonderful new pet that will feel right at home in your apartment, consider adopting one of these four pets.

Birds

Birds such as parakeets and parrots are docile pets that will spend the majority of their time inside their cages. They don't need a ton of space to roam, they don't need to be taken outside to relieve themselves, and they aren't typically bothered by noise and commotion. So long as you keep their cages clean and take them out to play from time to time, a pet bird will be perfectly at home living in your apartment.

Cats

While some cats are more high-energy than others, most cats make for laid-back pets that are entirely content with spending most of their time indoors. Best of all, cats that are trained to use a litter box don't need to be taken outside to use the restroom.

Fish

A fish is arguably the most low-maintenance pet you can find. Simply feed them and keep their tank clean and your fish will be happy wherever you place them. With a wide range of fish species to choose from, you should have no trouble finding the perfect aquatic friend for your apartment.

Gerbils and hamsters

Gerbils and hamsters are pets that are able to get all the exercise they need running on a wheel inside their cage, meaning that they are completely content spending their entire lives indoors. If you keep their cages clean, spend some quality time with them, and remember to keep them fed and watered, gerbils and hamsters can make for wonderful apartment pets.

Conclusion

Bringing a new member into your family is always a big decision, and it's important to make sure you choose a pet that will feel just as at home as you do in your apartment. At our Dallas apartments, we are welcoming to a wide variety of pets. If you would like to learn more about our pet policy or the floor plans we have available, be sure to contact us today.

It may seem silly to make a homemade treat for your pet in the apartments in Dallas, especially because little Whiskers or Rover won't be able to tell if the treat came from you or the store. But in addition to being less expensive, homemade treats are healthier for your pet because you know exactly what went into them. Here are a few easy treats you can make today.

Frozen Yogurt Treats

Dogs have a tendency to eat without thinking, which can ultimately lead to a mess. A frozen treat forces them to slow down a little, so they can actually enjoy their food (and hopefully digest it properly). These frozen yogurt treats use peanut butter, banana and honey to give each serving a delectable flavor that your dog will love on a hot summer day.

Yarn Balls With Catnip

Exercise is pivotal for cats to keep their bodies healthy and their minds happy. They may seem like sedentary creatures, but they need you to encourage them to do more! These yarn balls are made with paper, Styrofoam, and of course, the all-important catnip. The star of the toy is hidden at its center so cats need to dig to get to what they want. They'll have no choice but to roll the ball along and chase after it. You can certainly be a part of the game if you want, or you can leave a ball for your cat to pass the time while you're away.

Trail Mix

Cooking anything in the kitchen usually generates scraps that can end up being thrown in the garbage. But why not turn those extra trimmings into a trail mix that you can use to reward your dog when you're out on a walk or just hanging out at home? Trail mix can be made by cutting up different veggies, meats and fruits into small pieces before drying them out in the oven. You'll cut down on waste and make your dog happy at the same time.

The apartments in Dallas aren't the same without the unconditional love of your pet. If you're looking for a complex that wants to treat your pets the way they deserve to be treated, call South Side Flats today.

Let's face it: taking care of pets when you are working or out of town can be stressful for both sides of the equation. Fortunately, there are a number of solutions available to help you make taking care of basic needs easier than ever. Here's a quick look at some of the basics to make everything easier when you're separated from your precious pet.

Keep Your Pet Watered

Animals should always have access to fresh water. For most situations, having an auto-waterer on hand that uses a vacuum chamber to only let water out when it's needed works wonders. Though auto-filling waterers that hook up to a water supply are tempting, remember that if you have a rambunctious pet, they may knock it over and cause serious flooding and property damage before it can be fixed!

Feeding Time!

If you end up working late regularly, you don't want your pet to go hungry because of your odd hours. Consider switching to a schedule that allows you to feed before you head to work or invest in an automatic feeder that drops food at the same time every day. You won't worry and your pet will have a full tummy.

Keeping an Eye on the Action

Cheap cameras allow us to use them for more purposes than ever before. Setting up a few cameras around your apartment that you can access remotely allows you to see your pet even when you're in the office. Consider pairing it with a speaker so that your pet can hear your voice to help fight loneliness.

Have a Backup in Place

Of course, sometimes things just don't go according to plan and you're stuck across town or away from the area. At this point, your best bet is to have someone who has access to your place who can go check on your pet on a regular basis, especially if your pet has health issues that need to be monitored.

By having a plan to take care of the basics while you're away, both you and your pet will rest easier. If you're looking for awesome, pet-friendly apartments in Dallas, we have you covered. Why not contact our office today and see what's available for you and your four-legged companion?
