Do you love Christmas lights and wish you could light up your apartment like some of the houses you see on TV? Your balcony gives you a great canvas to put on a display. Here are a few of the most common ideas.

Icicle Lights

Icicle lights are the simplest way to light up your balcony. Just get a string that matches the length of your balcony railing and run it along the top. Most people prefer white icicle lights since you're trying to make it look like hanging ice, but you can also choose from festive colors if that's your preference

Wrap the Railings

Instead of hanging lights from the top of your balcony railing, you may wish to make your railings themselves the focal point. Instead of fading into darkness at night, they become the display.

Simply wrap string lights around your railings. You can either just do the main beams or every single beam depending on how many lights you want. Remember that since you'll be wrapping the lights rather than running them straight, you'll probably need two to three times the length of lights that you would to go straight across the length of your balcony.

Net Lights

Net lights are mostly to cover bushes, but you can still put them to work on your balcony. Match them to the size of your railing, and use them like a screen. This gives you a simple way to cover your entire railing without having to arrange multiple strings of lights.

Use Pathway Lights

Stores almost always sell candy canes, small Christmas trees, and other festive decorations that stake into the ground next to a sidewalk. You can tie these to your balcony railing to create a more festive look beyond just simple string lights.

Don't Forget a Timer

With short winter days, you may be coming home after dark, and your neighbors might appreciate if you don't leave your lights on till 4 a.m. Get a solar sensor or clock-based timer to automatically adjust your lights.

To learn more about how our residents get ready for the holidays, stop by our Dallas, TX, apartments today. We'll be happy to give you a tour.

Adding vintage decor is an easy, and inexpensive, to add a bit of personality to apartments in Dallas. But, finding the best pieces at the best prices takes a bit of hunting. Since you can’t simply pop down to the nearest home décor store, you’ll need to know where to look for authentic vintage items.

Ask family members

Before you start shopping, put out the word to family members that you are interested in decorating with vintage décor. You might be surprised at the treasures that aunts, uncles, and grandparents are willing to share to make your space feel like home.

Yard sales

Garage or yard sales can be excellent sources of vintage décor if you are willing to put in a little work. For the best chances of finding vintage items, hit up sales in the suburbs. Read listings carefully to get an idea of what items are available and put together a route that allows you to make several stops in one day.

Thrift shops

Charity shops, like Goodwill or Salvation Army, can be gold mines of vintage and retro décor, especially furniture pieces. Often, thrift shop items are in less-than-perfect condition, so it helps to go in with a creative eye. If you are willing to clean, paint or repair a diamond in the rough, you could end up with a one-of-a-kind vintage item that perfectly suits your style.

Antique Shops

Though they are probably priced higher, antique shops will have a more extensive selection of vintage items than thrift shops or yard sales. Better yet, antique stores are staffed by professionals who can answer questions and help you find specific items.

Online

Finding vintage décor doesn’t always mean crawling through grandma’s attic or spending your Saturday hopping between thrift shops and yard sales. On the right sites, you can score plenty of vintage finds from the comfort of your couch. Etsy and eBay are excellent for finding good pieces at great prices. For a curated selection of high-quality items, with matching price tags, check out One Kings Lane or Jason Home.

Finding vintage items and decorating Dallas, TX apartments is a fun, creative adventure. To find a floor plan in an architecturally significant, modern home in the artsy, culturally diverse, historic Cedars neighborhood to house your collection of treasures, call South Side Flats today to schedule a showing.

Privacy ScreenAre you looking to add function to your Dallas apartments? It’s easy to do with the use of privacy screens. Privacy screens allow you to section off areas of your apartment home to be used for specialty purposes. If you’ve ever wished that you had a separate area to do anything in your apartment home, a privacy screen is a great solution.

What Are Privacy Screens?

Privacy screens are free-standing panels that are connected with hinges. Some privacy screens have three panels, but there are also privacy screens with four or more panels. The more panels the privacy screen has, the longer it is and the more area it will block off. The beauty of privacy screens is that you can configure it any way you want. Since it’s free-standing, you don’t have to place it near a wall or any other structure in order for it to stand up in a stable position. You can also make the panels fold almost any way you want, so privacy screens are very convenient for use in apartment homes.

What Can Privacy Screens Be Used For?

People use privacy screens for many different things. Some people do podcasts in their home, and they don’t want the area behind the camera to be seen on-screen. They place a privacy screen behind them to look more professional. Other people use privacy screens to create a home office area. Since home offices can sometimes get a little messy, the privacy screen helps to block the mess so that the person doesn’t have to look at it when they’re finished working or have guests over. Finally, sometimes privacy screens are simply used to create some privacy. Maybe you have a guest over and wish to have privacy to dress without asking them to leave the room. This is just another way that privacy screens are so very useful!

If you like the idea of using privacy screens, there’s no doubt that you’ll find even more creative uses for this affordable furnishing. If you’d like to see our architecturally significant, modern Dallas apartment homes in the artsy, culturally diverse, historic Cedars neighborhood, we’d love to hear from you. Potpourri
Many appreciate the aroma of potpourri in their Dallas apartments and homes. A well-crafted potpourri can add freshness and a warm atmosphere to an indoor space. Most people, however, associate potpourri with the cooler weather of the fall and winter. But did you know that you can make homemade potpourri for any season, including the spring?

Better yet, when you make your own stovetop potpourri, you can customize the blend of ingredients to best suit your sense of smell. Getting started is simple. Here are two homemade stovetop potpourri recipes to bring a springtime freshness to your space.

Lemon, Mint, and Thyme

Fresh citrus is the perfect choice for fragrant spring potpourri. This simple recipe calls for three slices of lemon, a handful of mint and some thyme. Place the mixture in two cups of water on the stove and heat to bring out the aroma. You can modify this recipe by swapping lime for lemon and by adding some fresh ginger. Add water as needed.

Lime, Mint, and Rosemary

Add three or four slices of lime in a pot with two cups of water and some mint and rosemary and heat to a slow simmer. Soon these fresh aromas will fill your home or apartment. Add water as needed. Add a stick of cinnamon if you wish to add another layer.

Additional Hints

It can be easy to forget you have a hot pot on the stove, so do not leave your home or retire for the evening without turning off your potpourri. Always make sure there is sufficient water in the pan. If you want to make fresh potpourri in advance, you can mix ingredients in a Mason-style jar for convenient storage in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them.

Making your own springtime stovetop potpourri is fun and rewarding. Enjoy how it adds a more comfortable feel to your Dallas apartment and living space.

Whether you’re just moving into your first apartment or have been living in your apartment for years, you’re probably looking for ways to create or refresh your indoor space to make the most of every inch. Furniture placement is the most cost-effective way of making your home feel welcoming. Here are some useful tips to make your new home feel spacious and inviting when searching for Dallas apartments.

Make the most of the space in your Dallas, Texas, apartment

Declutter

Before you make any decisions about where you want the couch placed, declutter. Take stock of all your belongings. Keep items that you use regularly and put things that you rarely use, or only use seasonally, in storage. Donate or toss everything else. This will give you a clean, uncluttered, blank slate to start with.

Think big

Start by moving in the larger items, such as your bed, sofa, and cabinets. Then build the rest of the room around these bulkier items. It is harder to work large pieces of furniture around smaller pieces. Once you have the placement for those items determined, then you can decide how to place coffee tables, put rugs underfoot, and hang pictures.

Think angular

You don’t have to place furniture square against a wall. It often helps to create flow in a room by placing furniture at an angle. This allows you to use other furniture creatively, such as installing a table behind your sofa. Creating staging can also make your room look more open and spacious.

Take advantage of natural light

Try not to block windows with bulky furniture. Natural lighting makes even the tiniest apartment feel bigger. In very small spaces, opt for vertical blinds that can be opened behind furniture rather than bulky draperies that can be overpowering.

Know when you’ve found the right fit

How will you know when your interior layout is perfect? You’ll feel comfortable and at ease in the space and find practicality and a sense of harmony in your arrangement. For more information about apartments in Dallas, Texas, that have a floor plan you’ll love, contact South Side Flats apartments today.

The right rugs will not only warm up your apartment but also improve its decor. Here are some tips to be aware of when shopping for rugs either online or at a local store.

Go Neutral

Colors such as light gray, beige and ivory tend to match well with existing furnishings and decorations. Furthermore, they give a room a spacious feel. As an added benefit, the colors mentioned above will also help brighten up a room that may only get a limited amount of natural lighting.

Enlarge Rooms With Stripes

Rugs with either vertical or horizontal stripes can make a room appear larger and more spacious than it actually is. Striped rugs are available in various sizes and styles, making it easy to find one that suits your tastes and budget.

Use Bold Rugs in Key Places

Using bold colors in the right places will give your apartment a friendly, vibrant feel. Apartment hallways and bathrooms are great places for colors such as red, orange or green. Alternatively, use rugs with a rich pattern in these areas to create a classy ambiance.

Pick a Pile With Care

Low-pile rugs tend to be affordable and easy to clean. They are the ideal option for those who suffer from allergies as they don't accumulate dust and debris. High-pile rugs, on the other hand, are perfect for anyone who wants to give an apartment a warm, cozy feel. They also help to insulate an apartment, keeping energy bills down in the winter and reducing noise in the living space.

When you move into an apartment, there’s a tendency to want to nest and make it your own. But how can you really let your personality show without losing your security deposit in the process? Here’s a quick look at some brilliant hacks to help you make your space unique.

Add Removable Tile

There are a few different types of removable tile now available on the market that can help to quickly dress up your backsplash with no permanent marks.

Go With Contact Paper

Whether it’s a wood finish on the cabinets, a chalkboard wall, marble-finish countertops or even faux stainless steel for your appliances, contact paper covers it all and is still removable at the end.

Put Up Some Curtains

Sure, it’s tempting to just live with the blinds that are already there, but curtains allow you to quickly add a lot of personality to a room. Bonus: Try magnetic rods if you have steel-framed windows.

Lean It

Whether it’s a beautiful painting or a large mirror, leaning it against the wall, whether from the floor or on a tabletop, allows you to show off your style without any nail holes in the wall.

Accent It With Removable Wallpaper

Though it’s a little much to spend to take care of the entire apartment, you can use removable wallpaper to quickly and easily create an accent wall in your new home.

Cover It Up

If your new home’s flooring is blah, consider adding a vinyl flooring mat, area rug or similar solution to cover it up and allow your unique sense of style to show through.

Add Some Greenery

A few plants, even if they’re of the faux variety, allow you to quickly create an oasis. Bonus: Green spaces help you relax more easily during your downtime.

Moving into an apartment doesn’t mean you need to lose your home’s personality, and with these genius hacks, you’ll be able to quickly turn your apartment into a comfortable home that reflects the inner you. Looking for Dallas apartments and need a great community to hang out in? South Side Flats has your next home ready. Please feel free to contact us today to get started.

Is Thanksgiving at your place this year? You’ll probably be spending most of your time shopping, prepping, and cooking (and maybe just a little bit of cleaning). But you should also think about decorating too!

Make this wonderful American holiday even more special with these fun decoration ideas your guests will love!

1. Bring the outdoors in

If you live in an area where there are leaves-a-plenty, this is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to decorate for Thanksgiving. Whether you choose just a few crispy brown, orange, and yellow leaves to accent your centerpiece or scatter them around your crudités and appetizers table, they’re sure to brighten the mood with some fresh fall spirit.

2. Put up a “Thankful” board

Whether it’s a chalkboard, whiteboard, or poster board, decorate the edges of a large surface where your guests can write things that they’re thankful for. Write “I’m thankful for…” at the top, and leave out the appropriate writing utensils.

3. Decorate with pumpkins, squash, and gourds

The great thing about these decorations is that they last a long time. Purchase them before Halloween, and you’ll still have them around to use at your Thanksgiving table! A large pumpkin with several smaller gourds or squash surrounding it always makes a great centerpiece. Add some leaves, branches, or ribbon for some extra flair!

4. Make corn-husk wrapped candle holders

Lastly, get your craft on with a quick and easy project involving dried corn husks, some ribbon, and a few basic candle holders (just make sure they’re a basic cylindrical shape). Simply wrap the cornhusks uniformly around the candle holders, taking care to trim the excess off the top and away from the candle flame.

Affix the cornhusk pieces to the sides of the candle holders with glue if you don’t care about the glue possibly leaving a mark — or use some festival Thanksgiving-themed ribbon! White candles work best for this project, but you could use orange, deep red, or brown as well.

Our Dallas apartments are the perfect place to host your Thanksgiving dinner. Moving to the area or looking to relocate within Dallas? Call our office today to see which floor plans are still available.

We can't wait for you to explore our architecturally significant, modern home in the artsy, culturally diverse, historic Cedars neighborhood.
